Reflections on Our Lay Renewal Weekend

As I continue to reflect on our Lay Renewal Weekend, I am really impressed by several things that jump out to me:

  1. The Power of God - Look at how God put the team together who came and led us. They came from multiple states, with many not having ever met before. Our Coordinator, Bob Foy, had not really worked with any of the 31 team members before! Yet, God assembled this team just perfectly, bringing the right people for such a time as this in the life of our church. This reminds us that God is truly in control! He has everything and everyone at His disposal. We can trust Him to provide what - and who - is needed at just the right time. It also shows that He can use us to work together for His glory, even as He used this team to work together for three days. If we will be yielded and devoted to Him, there is nothing we cannot accomplish as God leads and guides!
  2. The Goodness of God - In testimony after testimony, the visiting team shared about the goodness and the grace of God! Just to hear what God is doing in the lives of people we have never met before demonstrates that God is all-loving and all-good! The same works of grace and mercy He has done for others, He will do in our lives as we draw close to Him.
  3. The Presence of God - God is present in us as followers of Jesus Christ all the time. I cringe sometimes when I hear people say, "I don't feel the Spirit there." That usually has more to do with "feelings" than with reality. The Spirit of God is present in the hearts of those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ! The Work of the Holy Spirit is evident whenever Jesus Christ is being lifted up and glorified - that is what the Spirit does! We saw that happen this weekend. Jesus Christ was lifted up and glorified in all that was done. There are times when God allows us to sense His Presence in overwhelming ways. For me, that happened this weekend, and what an encouragement that was to me. I know He is Present with us every time we worship. I see Him in your lives and hear Him in your voices. But I praise Him that He allowed us to have a "mountaintop weekend" where His Presence, that is always a reality, was so clearly evident in an abundance of ways.
  4. The People of God - You were so faithful to be present this weekend to open yourselves to what God wanted to say and do. There were lots of things you could have been doing on such a fine Spring Weekend. But you chose to put action to your words and desires. Many people say they want to draw closer to God, and sometimes complain that they don't feel the presence and power of God's Spirit at times. But it's one thing to talk and it's another to act. By being present and being prepared through prayer, you took action to open yourself to what God wanted to do in you. As a result, you were blessed to hear from God and experience His power and Presence. As God's People, let's not just talk about what we would like to see. Let's take action through obedience and commitment so that we can actually experience the power and Presence of God that we desire so much. Renewal can be an on-going, every day experience with the Lord who we love and serve.

Thank you again for being such a wonderful church family! What a joy it is to serve our Lord with you, and to walk the journey of faith alongside you.
